At this difficult time, you may have many questions about what to place in your loved one’s obituary. Here are a few helpful suggestions to help you stay within our format. We do require that all submissions be in writing. You can mail, email, or visit our office to place an obituary. Be sure to include your name/contact information including your mailing address and email on all submitted information.
Before submitting on your own, please check with the funeral home handling the arrangements as most of them are familiar with our procedures, format and deadlines.
The information below is for a paid obituary through the newsroom; the information below shows what we are able to print. If there is information listed that you do not care to publish, that is acceptable as well. This is an all-inclusive outline of what is permitted in the obituaries running through the newsroom.
Paragraph 1 – Full name of deceased (nickname), age, hometown, state, date of death and place and cause of death.
Paragraph 2 – Date and place of birth, parents’ names (living or deceased?), hometown if living, and spouse (living or deceased?). You may also put number of years married or spouse’s date of death here. Paragraph 3 – This should include biographical information in chronological order. Schools, jobs, military, clubs, memberships and hobbies.
Paragraph 4 – Names of survivors and their relationship to the deceased, (i.e., children, children’s spouses, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, great-grandchildren, close friends, etc.) You may include their name (first AND last names) and town of residence. If you do not care to include their name, you may list the number of children, etc. We do not list pets as survivors; you may include in the biographical information that your loved one enjoyed spending time with their pet and include their name. Names of relatives they were predeceased by, or if you wish just relationship (i.e., predeceased by three sisters).
Paragraph 5 – Time, date and place of visitation. Time, date and place of funeral/memorial service/graveside service, etc., location, officiating clergy and interment/inurnment. Our format will change officiating clergy that are listed as Father to “the Rev.” Memorial contributions with full mailing address and/or website if mailing address isn't available.
Paragraph 6 – If a funeral home is not mentioned, please note the name and address of the establishment handling the arrangements.
Photos may be included; an original photo may be brought in or a jpg attachment in email may be used.
The cost of the obituary is $3 per line with 30 characters to a line. The total cost will depend on how much information you wish to include and the length; please note that a photo will be an additional $35 per day, discounts given for multiple publications.
Any obituary received after stated deadline will not be published until the next available publication date. All information must be submitted, typed, proofed, verified and paid for before deadline, through the newsroom, in order to be published in the next day’s paper. Free death notice if you’d like a free death notice it would include the information in Paragraph 1 and the date, time and place of service and visitation. This does not include the name of the officiating clergy. Courtesy obituary notices are never guaranteed to run on a specific date. Only one publication is given to each courtesy notice.
