Between Bites: Sandwiches a good reason to lunch in Newcastle
Who doesn’t love a good sandwich? It seems so simple — bread, meat, cheese, condiments — yet the combination of these parts can make for one satisfying lunch. Case in point — The Newcastle Cheese Shop and Deli, located at 455 Main St. Suite C in Newcastle. I’ve heard good things about this place, but in the three years I’ve been with the Journal, I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t tried it until lunch today. The menu is simple and to the point. You’ve got your sandwiches, sides, soup, chips. Upon approaching the counter, I opted for turkey with smoky sharp cheddar and on a Dutch crunch roll. My boyfriend Chris got sucked in by “The Rat Trap,” the shop’s signature sandwich, which is basically a medley of everything in the deli case — turkey, ham, roast beef, pastrami and different cheese. Both sandwiches were $5.95 each, huge, and tasty. The Dutch crunch had the perfect texture and a slightly sweet flavor. Lots of meat and cheese, and bonus points should be given due to the fact that these guys use whole-leaf lettuce. The shredded stuff just doesn’t cut it. If you’re extra hungry, try a side of the potato salad. It’s made with red potatoes, and has a healthy dose of black pepper, which we both liked.
