Becky Johnson Sabin, a 1988 Placer High graduate, flew to New York in September to compete on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.” Her episodes air at 3 p.m. today and Thursday on Channel 10.

Who wants to be a millionaire? Well, Becky Johnson Sabin, for one.

The 1988 Placer High graduate, who currently resides in Sacramento, will be a contestant on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” her episodes airing today and tomorrow.

“I just have one of those brains that retains the most random knowledge,” Sabin, 37, said during a phone interview Tuesday. “Now I can put it to good use.”

Sabin, her husband Greg and two other friends all attended a call for local contestants at the Jackson Rancheria Casino & Hotel in June. All four passed the written test, and Sabin said she and Greg both moved on to face-to-face interviews, followed by on-camera interviews. Sabin later received a postcard that she’d made it into the contestant pool, while her husband had not.

Sabin said show producers called her four weeks before the show was set to tape, telling her the tape date was Sept. 23, and that she could be held over until Sept. 24, and that she and Greg, her travel companion, should plan travel to and from New York City accordingly.

The scheduled taping occurred the same time as a good friend’s wedding, which Sabin missed, and just a couple days before she attempted the Rio Del Lago 100 Mile Endurance Run, which occurred Sept. 27.

The tough times, though, were yet to come, as Sabin has had to keep a zipped lip about the experience and any winnings until after the show airs.

“I had no idea how difficult the time between the time I taped and the time it airs would be,” she said. “The questions are nonstop. I’m really good at keeping secrets, and the only person who knows is my husband, and that’s (only) because he was in the studio audience. I know it’s really driving my mom nuts because she’d love to spill the beans.”

Mom Sally Johnson lives in Rocklin.

“The whole thing was very exciting,” she said.

Johnson said the family always had an interest in trivia and game shows.

“As a family we would always sit and watch ‘Jeopardy,’ and I’ve always watched ‘Millionaire,’” she said.

Sabin has tried her luck at a couple “Jeopardy” contestant searches in the past, and her husband came in second on the trivia show some 10 years ago.

In fact, one of the pair’s first dates involved trivia.

“My husband and I went to Streets of London pub trivia (in Sacramento) on our second date and we won, just the two of us,” she said. “That’s when we knew, this is the person for me.”

See Sabin on “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” at 3 p.m. today and Thursday on News10 (ABC).
