Placer repeats as perfect PVL champion
Grapplers tune up for duals with rout of Mesa Verde
The Placer High wrestling team had already wrapped up the Pioneer Valley League championship heading into Thursday night’s match at Mesa Verde. But the Hillmen were determined to add the icing on the cake in Citrus Heights. Placer did just that, routing the Mavericks 56-15 to finish off its second straight perfect season in the PVL. The Hillmen won their first title in over 20 years last season and finished 6-0 in the PVL again. Sophomore Jordan Trout began the match with a pin at 103 pounds. Andrew Naleway followed with a pin at 112 and Dalton Richardson added a win by technical fall at 119. Junior Mitchell Maddox pinned his opponent at 130, Carl Pavich picked up a pin at 135 and Steven Cox was a winner by decision at 145. Zach Scott posted a pin at 152. Tyler Hickman was a winner by pin at 160 and Mike Stangland had a pin at 189. Senior Cody Romero picked up a victory via forfeit at 215. The Hillmen will take on the top two teams from each of the Division IV leagues at Saturday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Team Duals. The competition will begin at 9 a.m. at Rosemont High. Placer made it to the semifinals at last year’s section duals before falling to eventual champion Sonora. In junior varsity action, Placer posted three impressive wins. Zach Uvalle had a pin at 103, Noah Stedman pinned his opponent and 160 and Cameron Southward picked up a pin at 171.
