Nevada County pot raid nets big numbers
Nevada County law enforcement has tallied up the amount of marijuana seized from a rural plantation and the numbers are big. According to Sheriff Keith Royal, a raid Wednesday morning on gardens located on 360 acres of land owned by a North San Juan man has yielded 135 pounds of processed marijuana and 602 plants. As well, $200,000 in cash was recovered. The alleged grower — 55-year-old Charles Hilkey — was arrested on federal drug-related charges along with another individual, whose name was not being released. Two others — Melissa Thomas, 51, of North San Juan, and Douglas Schuurman, 32, of Clairmont – were charged with planting and cultivating marijuana. Schuurman is also charged with transporting and selling marijuana and criminal conspiracy. An earlier release said Hilkey is suspected of earning about $1.9 million from the plantation during the past two years.
