Wine and Food Festival draws record crowds
Downtown road construction didn’t hinder a record number of wine enthusiasts from pouring into Auburn on Saturday. The annual Auburn Wine and Food Festival drew more than 800 people to Old Town and Downtown Auburn, according to organizers. For many, the festival was their first introduction to town. Kristin and John Lee made the trek from Reno. “This is our first time,” Kristin said. The Lees were looking for something to do on a day trip and discovered the festival online. “Originally, we were looking for something to do in Nevada City,” John said. “That’s when I read about the wine festival.” They said the road construction on Lincoln Way didn’t hinder them in the least. “It looks nice what they are doing there with the bricks and concrete,” John said. Allison Murray of Rocklin said it was also her first time attending the festival. “It’s been pretty good,” she said. “We haven’t had too many wines we haven’t liked yet.” Vicky Morris, co-owner of Secret Ravine Winery in Loomis, poured wine from inside Roper’s Jewelers. “It’s such a pretty day today,” Morris said. “Roper’s is a nice location to serve wine.” She said a popular choice for the day was their Rattlesnake Red. “That’s what people know us for,” she said. “We always have to bring it to events like these.” Ashley Moore traveled from Hamburg, Germany, to visit family in Foresthill and attend the festival. “This is our first time in Auburn,” Moore said. “It’s beautiful here.” Scott and Alia Shuttleworth of Auburn said it was also their first time. “We’ve always heard good things about the event so we thought we’d try it out,” Alia said. Marybelle’s Restaurant co-owner Tom Stout said there seemed to be a lot of people coming through as he served Thai chicken sausage inside Victory Velo bicycle shop. “It’s been pretty steady,” he said. “They seem to be beating down the door.” Teri Gibson, one of the festival organizers and owner of Christmas Village, said the event went off without a hitch. “It couldn’t have been a better day,” Gibson said. “People are shopping even in non-venue stores.”
