CHP dispatch receives calls of juveniles running into traffic
Sergeant unable to find suspects on I-80

Two juveniles were reportedly trying to jump into Interstate 80 traffic near Auburn Thursday, California Highway Patrol officials said.

At about 3 p.m., 9-1-1 dispatchers received multiple phone calls about the incident, said CHP spokesman David Martinez.

However, a CHP sergeant dispatched to the area of the freeway between the Newcastle Road and Lincoln Way exits did not spot the two suspects, Martinez said.

One caller to the CHP dispatch reported that a Wal-Mart truck almost hit one of the pedestrians. Another caller reported juveniles running in and out of the slow lane.

Martinez said that often times people are reported on the side of the freeway or in it because they are trying to retrieve lost items or trying to cross the road.

Martinez said pedestrians need to be aware of how dangerous it is to be next to a road where cars are driving 65 miles per hour plus.

“You really have no idea how fast cars are coming out there,” Martinez said. “You may think you have time to react, but you don’t.”
