Recreation Park getting major upgrades
The oldest facility in the Auburn Area Recreation and Park District is getting a major facelift as work continues this week at the main building at Recreation Park. Here’s what’s being done:
Locker room remodel Major renovations are underway on the locker rooms. The work, being completed by PBM Construction, includes new showers, lockers and skylights. Crews are also updating the electrical system in the building and providing improved accessibility for the disabled. The remodel should be complete after the first of the year, said District Administrator Kahl Muscott, just in time for local swim teams to start their seasons in February. Cost: $400,000. “(The locker room) was a nightmare. It was something where families from other teams were embarrassed by the locker rooms they looked so bad,” said Jeff Ambrosia, past-president of the Auburn Robalos swim team and Master Swimmer. “We’re thrilled the renovations are taking place and appreciate the effort by the ARD board that made it possible. It’s much overdue. We eagerly await completion.”
Reroofing the gym A leaky roof has plagued the gym building, causing numerous puddles during the last few rainy seasons. But with new roof being installed by contractors Gudgel-Yancey, that should be a thing of the past. Muscott said work is around 70 percent complete and should be wrapping up in the next couple weeks. Cost: $89,000. “We patched and repaired as much of the roof as we could during the last few years,” Muscott said. “We finally reached a point where we had to do a major roof replacement. While this isn’t the sexiest of projects, it will make a big difference in our ability to maintain our aging infrastructure.”
Registration kiosk A new kiosk that will allow visitors to register for ARD programs in the gym lobby has been installed. Signups for ARD classes, camps and leagues can be done using the kiosk, which connects to the online registration at auburnrec.com. The kiosk, which has been dubbed “Bob” by ARD staff, is up and running. Cost: $3,500. “We’ve reduced the hours of our customer service office (as a cost-cutting measure), so this was one of those ideas if people come by to register and, oh darn, the office is closed, they can do it right there online,” Muscott said.
