Placer’s Thornton takes second at tourney
Joe Thornton placed second in his weight class and several of his fellow Placer High wrestlers earned third-place finishes on Saturday at the Clayton Valley Tournament. Thornton pinned each of his first three opponents before falling in triple overtime in the 140-pound title match. The junior’s performance helped the Hillmen place third in the tournament’s team standings. Leading Placer’s third-place finishers were junior 160-pounder Steven Cox, who pinned four opponents en route to going 4-1, and senior heavyweight Jake Styler, who went 3-1 and likewise earned all of his victories by pin. Sophomore Zach Uvalle (112 pounds) and freshman Michael Robinson (171) also took third in their respective weight classes for the Hillmen. Senior Aaron Maddox took fourth at 145 pounds with a 3-2 record, while junior Andrew Naleway placed fourth at 118. Seniors Dalton Richardson and Carl Pavich also earned medals — Richardson came in fifth at 125 pounds, while Pavich placed eighth at 135. The Hillmen will take part in two Pioneer Valley League duals this week, hosting Whitney on Tuesday before traveling to face Bear River at Thursday. Both duals will start at 6 p.m.
