Local group to celebrate Women's History Month

Coretta Scott King was so much more than the wife of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Sierra Foothills branch of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom celebrates Women’s History Month, and the life of the civil rights icon, with “A Song for Coretta,” a one-act play coming to Auburn March 27.

“Most of the time when we talk about the civil rights movement, we hone in on Martin Luther King,” said Millee Livingston of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom. “There are people in the world that make a difference, and here is just one person who did that.”

The Sacramento-based Celebration Arts Theatre Company presents Pearl Cleage’s “A Song for Coretta,” which runs roughly 90 minutes.

“The actors are lined up at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, Ga. to pay their respects to Coretta Scott King,” Livingston said.

Livingston said one actor portrays a journalist who asks mourners to share how Coretta Scott King impacted their lives.

“It’s a play for all people,” Livingston said.
