Colfax's Josh Moreno struggles through a trio of Durham defenders Friday night. Moreno tallied 90 rushing yards and a 61 yard reception for a first quarter touchdown. The Colfax Falcons defeated the Durham Trojans 21-13 with two late touchdowns late in the fourth quarter.

LOOMIS - Two weeks into the high school football season, the Colfax Falcons might want to think about changing their nickname to the “Comeback Kids”.

For the second straight week the Falcons put their fans on the edge of their seats and for the second consecutive week the Colfax squad rallied from a second half deficit for an exciting non-league win.

Leading off the two-day “Battle at the Capital” showcase hosted here Friday by Del Oro High, the Falcons struck for two lightning quick touchdown passes within 20 seconds of each other in the fourth quarter to rally past Durham’s Trojans for a 21-13 win.

Colfax, now 2-0 on the season, played the highly-touted visitors from the North Section on even terms in a 7-7 first half before shocking the Trojans from the Chico area with a pair of Austin Young to Chase Mosier scoring aerials that rallied the Falcons from a 13-7 deficit.

“This team has faced a lot of adversity this season but I’ll tell you this…they show up to practice every day, don’t complain and work hard,” said Colfax coach Tony Martello. “I’m so proud that they were rewarded tonight with the win.”

Colfax senior all-purpose back Josh Moreno echoed Martello’s sentiments.

“We were pumped in the second half,” said Moreno who more than picked

up the slack on offense in the absence of injured two-way standout Tom Baldoni who was sidelined with an injury suffered in the El Camino game.

“We played a good second half,” Moreno added. “Durham’s a good team but we were able to make the plays.”

For Colfax, the game almost became a battle of attrition between the Falcons’ defensive unit and Durham’s Nelson Fishback, a standout pass-run quarterback who kept Colfax defenders at bay most of the evening.

Fishback, being courted by several Div. I schools on the West Coast, accounted for 224 of Durham’s 279 total yards. The 6-2 senior scored the Trojans’ two touchdowns on runs of 14 and nine yards and also hit on 17 of 35 passes for 169 yards.

But after Colfax had taken a 14-13 lead to start the fourth quarter on a 24-yard scoring pass from Young to Mosier and Austin Fitzhugh’s ensuing extra point kick, Benton Brown got to Fishback on an option play causing a fumble that Danny Walker recovered giving the Falcons excellent field position at the Trojans 18-yard line.

On the first play after the turnover, Young found Mosier on a slant pattern that the senior wide receiver took in for the score. Fitzhugh’s extra point boot with 11:33 to play put the Falcons ahead, 21-13.

Colfax’s defense then came alive the rest of the way as Durham was faced with poor field position. Led by Walker, Roger Lillie, Brennan Holman Peter Freer and Alex Chaney, the Falcons surged dropped Fishback for three fourth quarter sacks, the Falcons were able to ward off the Trojans’ comeback hopes.

Walker had a superb defensive game for the Falcons with four sacks and a fumble recovery while Jake Karbowski added a pass interception.

On offense, Moreno rushed 16 times for 104 yards and also snared four passes for 85 more yards. Moreno was also on the receiving end of a 61-yard scoring pass from Young which started the game’s scoring in the first quarter.

Young hit on 15 of 26 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns. Mosier was the Falcons’ big target on the night with nine receptions for 127 yards and two scores.

"Battle at the Capital" officials honored Colfax's Walker and Durham's Fishback with the game sportsmanship awards.
