LAKE OF THE PINES - With a strong defense and a powerful running game, the Bear River Bruins pounded past the Capital Christian Cougars, 24-7. The game featured strong performances from junior cornerback, Dallen Huetter (who had one interception), and senior RB, Sam Houston, whose first-half total of 81 yards recalled his juggernaut of a game against Cordova last week.
In the first quarter, senior RB Chris Carcido scored the game's first touchdown with a strong 15-yard run, beating the defense to the outside. And, it was Bruins QB, James Harris, who capped off two drives in the second quarter with two 1-yard QB keepers, putting the Bruins up 21-0 at half.
The second half, however, was all about Sean O'Brien. The Bruins Fullback ran the ball eleven times for 56 yards against the Cougars. Looking to run out the clock with a large lead, Bear River went to O'Brien almost every play late in the game, including a key 4th down conversion late in the 4th quarter to maintain possession.
The Cougars, playing without starting Quarterback, Jacob Woehler, ran their offense through David Oates, who normally plays wide receiver. He struggled all night against a tough defense, with only two completions and an interception. Oates did, however, provide the Cougars with their only offensive spark, when, late in the 3rd quarter, he broke free to the outside on a QB keeper for a 44-yard touchdown.
That touchdown run was the only lapse in an otherwise fantastic defensive performance by the Bruins. Limiting Capital Christian to four-and-outs and five- and six-play drives, the Bear River defense established perfect field position for their offense all night and helped the Bruins dominate the time of possession.
The Bruins, now 2-0, look to continue their strong start at Golden Sierra next Friday night.

"We'll take it," Bruins JV coach Chris Bean said of tonight's win, shaking his head at his team's lackluster start in the first half. "We started out flat—we've been flat all week long—and we came out and fumbled on one of the first plays." Despite the start, the team still managed to put up strong numbers. Quarterback Dillon Smith threw two touchdown passes and Cody Heard ran for two more. And 5'7" RB J'Sean Harwood added another, rushing for his first touchdown of the season.
