A third candidate is poised to run for supervisor in eastern Placer County's District 5, a seat now held by Weimar's Bruce Kranz.

Jennifer Montgomery, a Serene Lakes resident and small business owner, has scheduled an event Thursday in Auburn to officially announce her intentions to run for office.

The announcement will take place at 4 p.m. Thursday outside the Placer County elections division office.

Kranz, in his fourth year as supervisor, and Meadow Vista business owner Bob Houston have already registered as District 5 candidates.

Montgomery formed a committee in November on the premise of challenging Kranz, who won four years ago against incumbent supervisor Rex Bloomfield of Meadow Vista on his second try. She has since raised nearly $40,000 in political contributions.

"Since Bruce Kranz took office in 2004, eastern Placer County communities have lost their voice," Montgomery said in a news release.

A 20-year Donner Summit resident, Montgomery worked in construction, the ski industry and for the state of California before starting her own business in 2001.

Here are some questions that voters might have:

1. Has she ever held elective office? If so, what and when?

2. What kind of business did she start in 2001?

3. Does she have any education past high school?

4. What is her political philosophy or party affiliation?

5. Who contributed the $40K? Ski resorts? Developers? Individual donors?

6. How can she afford to live off a salary of $30K?

Montgomery has a campaign website that answered all my questions about her qualifications and platform:

Greengirl: Its interesting that she is going after Democrats, Greens and the liberal left.

Given this is a conservative county, seems counter-intuitive.

I bet she wins North Beach, Truckee, and maybe Donner. With those huge numbers, she will only be beaten by about 75%.
