Journalism Day at Bear River High School!
A few clouds and light drizzle didn’t stop over thirty students, advisers, and speakers from attending Journalism Day at Bear River High School. I was honored to be one of the guest speakers at today’s event to discuss Web design with students from Colfax High School, Oakridge High School, Bear River High School and Bret Harte High School. The day started with a keynote speech from Jeff Peline, editor of the Grass Valley Union. The students then broke into three groups, to attend workshops in news writing, digital photography, and Web design. Joining me from the Auburn Journal were Jenna Nielsen and Michael Kirby speaking in the workshops as well. The groups rotated every 40 minutes to the next workshop, giving all the students the chance to attend each workshop. This was a great opportunity for students to ask the speakers questions or concerns they had with the journalism industry. I found it especially interesting to hear what kind of journalism the students were interested in pursuing, and to hear about the newspaper or Web sites they are working on in their schools. I want to thank Rick Brown from Colfax High School and Terry McAteer from Bear River High School for inviting us to today’s event and for allowing me to share my journalism experience and advice with the students. It was a pleasure meeting all the students as well, and I wish them all the best in their future endeavors. My hope is that they will continue in their journalism studies, and that they will share their writing, pictures or blogs on this site for us all to enjoy. Thanks again to everyone!
