Biology professor David Lagala and students Amy Oettle, Darla Gonzales and Niylle Biza inflate a sheep lung in their biology class located in Sewell Hall.
This isn't the only problem area on the campus. Weaver Hall has run-down areas: classrooms/bathrooms. It took forever to get the bathrooms fixed in the Construction/Metals building. The women's locker room is disgusting. Although the new football field is beautiful, the money spent on the field could have been better used on these problem areas. The new math building is well worth the cost.
Sierra College does not have a funding problem, the Sierra College Board of Trustees has a leadership problem! Why can't the Board live within its current budget resources and make needed repairs? Because the Board has turned over the control of the Budget to their unions by giving the unions approximately 80% of all revenue and allows the union to set wage rates and staffing levels.
Two years ago Sierra College received $10 million in new windfall revenue but the Board automatically gave approximately 80% to the unions for their use. Then last year the College borrowed $9 million to buy a new telephone and new software systems. If the Board postponed giving the unions the windfall revenue the Board would not have needed to borrow these funds.
The Board of Trustees need to better represent taxpayers and students and stand up to the unions.
