Falcons, Hillmen advance to semis
Colfax takes thriller; Placer wins handily in Div. III quarterfinals
By Journal Sports Staff

Seniors Emmanuel Orozco and Brenden Armstrong pulled out a close third set in the No. 2 boys doubles match, helping the Colfax High tennis team edge host River City 4-3 on Monday in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division III quarterfinal in West Sacramento.

Orozco and Armstrong won the first set handily, 6-1, before dropping the second set 6-4. The two rebounded to win the next set 6-4 and set up a semifinal rematch with Escalon, whom Colfax hosted — and defeated — in last year’s semis.

Escalon, which boasts the section’s girls singles and mixed doubles champions, will host this year’s semifinal match at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Junior Josh Parker and senior Kari Zajac each won singles matches for Colfax (17-2). Parker triumphed 6-4, 6-0. Zajac won in straight 6-2 sets.

The Falcons’ pairing of senior Mari Katsura and junior Heidi Graves won the No. 1 girls doubles match 6-2, 6-1.

Placer 7, Lindhurst 0 at Lindhurst — Placer’s Sac-Joaquin Section champion doubles teams led the way as the Hillmen (19-0) blanked the Blazers to reach the Division IV semifinals.

Seniors Farrah Dobbas and Marissa Rodriguez, who teamed up to capture the section’s girls doubles crown, outlasted their opponents 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). The boys doubles champions, sophomore Cameron McAllister and senior Yannick Pfisterer, won in straight 6-3 sets for Placer (19-0).

Also winning in doubles were the boys pairing of sophomores Mike Fraguglia and Chris Swart, 6-2, 6-0; the girls tandem of juniors Amelia Arnold and Kristen Rolfson, 6-0, 6-1; and the mixed duo of junior Dan Ragusano and senior Meredith Evancie, 6-2, 6-1.

Placer will host its semifinal match against Riverbank at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Oak Ridge 5, Del Oro 4 at Broadstone Racquet Club, Folsom — The Golden Eagles’ top five singles players all lost as Del Oro (11-4) was eliminated from the Division II playoffs.

The only Golden Eagle to win a singles match was junior Taylor Carrington, who won 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Like Carrington, Del Oro’s No. 2 and 3 doubles tandems also won in three sets. The No. 2 pairing of senior Cody Sanders and junior Matt Hanson won 7-5, 6-7, 11-9, while the No. 3 duo of sophomore Nick Koop and senior Rowan Young triumphed 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Del Oro’s No. 1 doubles team of junior Garrett Dahlin and sophomore Spencer Butterfield won in straight 6-3 sets.
