The Placer High School Interact club presented Nick Willick with Auburn Rotary a check for $5,000 today in front of the Old State Theater in Auburn. The money will be used toward Project Auburn. This year The Old State Theater, the Carnegie Building and the Joe Elder bus station will be the focus of the planned upgrades.
Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people ages 14-18. The program gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends.
The Placer High Interact club has raised almost $7,000 this year alone, and has given away $17,000 to service groups in the past two years. The students, along with their adviser, Jonathan Adams, raise money through a variety of events and fundraisers, including cultural outreach to China, selling goods, popcorn sales, and the annual haunted house. The class also participates in service projects such as the American River clean-up and the Fun Run. They have also received a number of awards for community involvement.
Project Auburn is hoping to get about 400 volunteers for this year's annual community service fix-up day. If you'd like to help paint curbs, install benches, help with landscaping, and more, join the community on May 31st in front of the Old State Theater. The project will begin at 8 a.m. and run throughout the day.
