LAKE OF THE PINES — As the temperature soared near triple digits, the Forest Lake Christian girls soccer team cooled off in the baseball field sprinklers while celebrating revenge.
Katie Shore scored the winning goal in the 74th minute off a cross from Jessica Raskin and the Falcons beat Capital Christian 2-1 Thursday to advance to their second consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI championship game.
Forest Lake avenged a 2-1 overtime loss to the Cougars in last year’s section title game.
“This is the biggest game that we’ve played all year,” said Raskin, the two-time Central Valley Christian League MVP. “We haven’t wanted anything more than this.”
Both goals were the result of capitalizing on the special attention Capital gave Raskin, who moved to right wing to open opportunities for her teammates in the middle.
“We pushed Jessica out to the outside because they marked her the whole time, so one of their better players had to go out with her,” co-coach Ken Raskin said. “Then we just ran another girl in the middle.”
Katelyn Seitz broke a scoreless tie in the 43rd minute, driving a cross from Raskin across the goal that deflected off the left post and into the net.
The Falcons were still in total control when officials halted action in the 60th minute for a planned water timeout due to the extreme heat, conditions that required constant substituting.
“The heat was huge,” Jessica Raskin said. “During the day I drank literally ten 16-ounce bottles of water. I hydrated my guts out.”
Two minutes after play resumed, Capital’s Stephanie Long tied the score with a hard strike that went in off the crossbar and into the net.
With just six minutes remaining in the contest, Raskin dribbled down the right side and sent a cross in front of the goal from about 20 yards out. Cougars goalkeeper Ashlee Graham came out to intercept but dove for a save and missed, leaving Shore alone for the easy open-net finish.
Raskin, who now has 14 assists to complement her 25 goals, still feels at home in the middle.
“I hate crossing,” she said. “I told my dad at the start of the year, ‘Don’t you ever put me in the outside mid.’ I really like playing center, but I can cross so I said, ‘Why not?’ Their stopper was on me the entire game so it really gave us an opportunity. It gave us open players.”
Alaura Woody, Jordan England, Lindsey Engbrecht and Elysa Vierra anchored a stellar Forest Lake defense.
“Those girls played their hearts out today,” Ken Raskin said.
Goalkeeper Morghan Pomeroy made two key saves, including a one-way lean that took a goal away from Cougars star Brittany Flanagan in the first half.
“She knew Flanagan was going to go far-post, so you act like you’re covering near but you’re actually leaning for the jump,” Ken Raskin said. “She’s practiced that 1,000 times.”
The Falcons will play Bradshaw Christian for the section title on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lincoln High in Stockton. The Pride (13-7-2) beat Le Grand 4-1 on Thursday.
