Some of the world’s top endurance athletes will be in town Sunday to take on the grueling World’s Toughest Half triathlon, the Auburn International Triathlon and the Auburn Intenational Duathlon.
The three separate events begin at Rattlesnake Bar on Folsom Lake and end at the Auburn Dam Overlook. More than 500 athletes of all ages and abilities are expected to compete, including world duathlon champion Gordy Halterman and top U.S. amateur triathlete Nick Thompson.
The World’s Toughest Half triathlon is the longest of the three events. Competitors will embark on a 1.2-mile swim before getting on their bikes for a 56-mile ride and finishing with a 13.1-mile run.
The Auburn International Triathlong will include a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40K bike ride and a 10K run.
The Auburn International Duathlon, which will serve as the U.S. Long Distance National Championship, starts with a 3K run before a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run.
The events begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday at Rattlesnake Bar. The fastest competitors in the international triathlon are expected to clock in around 10 a.m. at the overlook. The top World’s Toughest and duathlon contenders are expected at the finish around 11:30 a.m.
The event concludes at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
Cyclists will be on the streets in and around Auburn on Sunday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Traffic will be delayed at the following intersections: Hwy. 49 and Lincoln Way, Foresthill Rd. and Lincoln Way, Bell Rd. and Bowman Rd. and Placer Hills Rd. and Lake Arthur Rd.
