Pete Meyer throws a toy duck for his Labrador retriever, Chief, to catch at the fourth annual Splash Dogs competition Sunday at Auburn?s Overlook Park. Chief jumped 19 feet for the toy duck, and was the winner of last year?s competition.

The weekend’s Splash Dogs competition wrapped up Sunday morning with a few dogs logging jumps of nearly 20 feet.

Dogs big and small take flying leaps off of a 45-foot “dock'” and into a pool at Auburn’s Overlook Park, put on by Bay Area dock jumping promoters Splash Dogs. The goal is to see which pup has the longest leap.

In pro finals of the competition, Reno resident Ross Swetland’s dog, Kyla, jumped 19.05 feet. Second place went to Dave Clausen of Susanville and his dog, Chole, who jumped 19.03 feet, third place to Jim Powell of Auburn and his dog, MickeyD, who jumped 19 feet and fourth place to Suzy Nicholson of Washoe Valley, Nev. and her dog, Tinka, who jumped 18.08 feet.

“The entire weekend went really well,” said Sandra Stewart, who coordinates the local dock-diving competition along with husband Jim Powell. “It really couldn’t have been more perfect — perfect weather and everyone had a great time.”

This weekend’s event also paid tribute to Stewart and Powell’s dog Cash, a 23-month-old dock diving star that died in 2005. The couple’s yellow lab MickeyD did an opening memorial jump in Cash’s honor during opening ceremonies Saturday, followed by the day’s first competitive jump with the help of 11-year-old granddaughter Kelly Smith.

Kelly took home first place during Sunday’s junior handler finals with MickeyD after he jumped 16.03 feet.

Second place went to Annie Harmon of Reno and her dog, Pepperspot, who jumped 13.1 feet, third place to Alexandra Rogers of Martinez and her dog, Remington, who jumped 12.07 feet and fourth place to Aradne Duncan of Auburn and her dog, Bo, who jumped 9.09 feet.

“This was our third year participating in the event and we just love it,” said Nicholson before Tinka made her fourth place jump Sunday. “She loves chasing the ball and it is fun to see such a little dog kick the bigger dogs' butts.”
