Capt. David Harris, of the Placer County Sheriff’s Department, said the fires were suspected to have been caused by a passing train, as the fires are all along the railroad track.

No homes were threatened, but voluntary evacuations occurred, said Harris.

Harris added that 50 firefighters had responded to the fire, and more were expected.

Fire crews included Loomis, Penryn, Auburn, Lincoln, South Placer, Placer County and Sac Metro Fire, and Cal Fire, which dropped loads of retardant from the air.

The initial call reporting the fire was made at 11:35 a.m.
