Represa, Calif., Aug. 12, 2008- Incarcerated Veterans in Folsom State Prison have a mission to help their fellow vets and have demonstrated this boldly through their donation of $3,878.31 to the Soldiers’ Angels Northern California Athletic Scholarship Fund.
“The community partnership between Soldiers’ Angels and our Military Veterans Group has provided our men with a common goal and the means to achieve it,” said Associate Warden, Karim Noujaim. “They worked hard, with great enthusiasm to raise these funds by holding a food sale and are honored to be able to help.”
Presenting the check to Soldiers’ Angels were Karim Noujaim, Associate Warden; Richard Hawkins, Community Partnership Manager; Kawatha Geter, Supervising Correctional Cook & the group’s sponsor; Arthur Gee, MVGF Chairman; and MVGF members Shelby Deville, Gilbert Fuentes, David Tuggle and David Chesneau.
The Soldiers’ Angels Northern California Athletic Scholarship Fund will provide veterans with disabilities the funds they need for training, equipment or transportation to pursue their athletic goals. The ‘Thank You for Your Service 2008’ event, held on September 20 at River Cats Independence Field in Sacramento, will provide veterans with an opportunity to sign up for the athletic scholarships. The executive team of the Military Veterans Group of Folsom will be part of the Soldiers’ Angels Scholarship Selection Committee to review and approve athletic scholarship applications.
“Veterans will be introduced to Paralympic sport techniques and opportunities through clinics, programs and camps run by the City of Sacramento, Department of Parks and Recreation, Paralympic Sport Sacramento program. The event is not just about sports; it is also about attitude, camaraderie and promoting healthy, active lifestyles,” said Louise Stanley of Soldiers’ Angels. “We are incredibly honored to receive these funds to help our veterans improve their quality of life.”
Soldiers’ Angels and the Military Veterans Group of Folsom have developed a comprehensive program that includes: Support of the Soldiers’ Angels Northern California Athletic Scholarship Fund; Introspective Reflections – each veteran is writing their story to help others returning home to not repeat the mistakes that put them behind bars; Life lessons; Exercise Programs – a veteran is developing martial arts exercises to help wounded warriors; VA Benefits Information & Assistance – Soldiers’ Angels provides veterans with information regarding VA benefits and pensions; and Family Support – Soldiers’ Angels provide veterans’ families with support on an as-needed basis; and Special Projects.
“Our association with Soldiers’ Angels has given our veterans an opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of fellow veterans which really helps improve their spirits,” said Kawatha Geter, Supervising Correctional Cook and the group’s sponsor. “Conducting this food sale to support our veterans was a terrific success for our group and we challenge the community to match or beat our contribution!”

About Soldiers’ Angels of Northern California
As a bridge between Northern California VA Healthcare system and the community at large, the mission of the Soldiers’ Angels Northern California VA Team is to reach out to local veterans most often overlooked and forgotten. Through Operation Lifeline – a project which involves distribution of clothes, books, games, toiletries and other sundries in backpacks called “Baskets of Thanks” we distribution them with our thanks to wounded Veterans at VA Hospitals across Northern California Homeless Shelters. We work with the Veterans at the Folsom State Prison to support our local heroes, as well as to any/all special requests made by the VA, Veterans and military families in need.
Soldiers’ Angels is an all-volunteer 501(c)3 which receives no government or United Way funding and relies solely on tax-deductive donations, 100% of which go to make sure we reach every Veteran in Northern California.

That is excellent, I think it's wonderful they did that, and the rest of the program sounds very positive as well. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and for the weblinks!
