Bring out the lemonade, iced tea and plenty of water, because the National Weather Service predicts Auburn temperatures will reach a high near 104 today.
Auburn temps will likely not reach the summer high of 107 recorded on July 7 in downtown Sacramento. The highest reading for Auburn on Thursday, was 99 recorded at 4 p.m. at the weather station near the Auburn airport.
Today will be hot, but temps will be lower on Saturday and Sunday, according to Angus Barkhuff, a meteorlogist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
“For the foothills we’re looking at a high of between 96 and 106, depending on where you are in the foothills,” Barkhuff said. “On Saturday, it’s going to be cooling down to 89 to 101 degrees. On Sunday, it will be even cooler with the highs 82 to 92.”
Foothill temperatures can be hard to predict due to the elevation ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 feet.
“For Auburn you will be looking at the higher end of that spectrum,” Barkhuff said in regard to the temperature range predictions he gave. “It’s going to stay cooler with a warming trend by the middle of the week, but nothing as hot as Friday.”
Members of the Placer High School freshman football team and staff, who were interviewed Thursday, all agreed that Thursday was not as hot as earlier summer practices. With school starting, the freshman squad has been out on the practice field from 3-5 p.m., according to coach Jim Gray.
“Two days in the summer were hotter,” Gray said. “With a couple of days when we had smoke, we would go inside the gym for high AQI (air quality index) days.”
Coach Phil Cox, freshman offensive line coach, would rate Thursday’s heat at seven on a scale of one to 10, but notes he’s not wearing a helmet and the rest of the equipment that players put on.
“Right now with the breeze, it hasn’t been as hot as it has been,” Cox said. “The breeze makes it bearable.”
Freshman Hillmen Mike Stangland, the starting center, also noted the heat was not as intense, but did not know about today’s predicted high of around 104.
“It’s pretty hot, but it’s like this about every day,” Stangland said. “I’d rate it about a seven out of 10. It’s not too bad.”
When it comes to the upcoming season, Stangland’s optimistic.
“We’re looking really good,” Stangland said. “We have a lot of hard hitters. I think we’ll have a good season.”
Freshman quarterback D.J. Rodriguez is happy to have a big line up front, and when it comes to the heat, it was not that big of deal yesterday.
“It’s actually a lot cooler today, but it’s hot,” Rodriguez said. “Our line is all over six-foot tall. We’re big. We just got to get our mental ability and we’re good.”
The Hillmen freshmen team is ready for their intra-squad scrimmage Saturday and maybe workouts will not be too bad during today’s predicted triple-digit heat.
