Home Shows draws more than 25,000
Only 1 model home this year
The final day of the Auburn Fall Home Shows ended Sunday with more than 25,000 attending the annual three-day event at the Gold Country Fairgrounds, according to producer Lani Johnston Horan. In the past, there have been as many as four manufactured model homes for people to visit and tour, but this year Angel & Associates had the only home on display. Karan Rae Drummond, general manager of Integrity Homes out of Oroville, kept up with a steady stream of visitors to the model Sunday afternoon, yet not as many as in past years. “The traffic seems a little less this year,” Drummond said. “I’ve been coming here the past six years. I’ve gotten about 10 serious leads with people looking into permits.” The manufactured three-bedroom home on display, named the Country Cottage, has a $75,000 price tag and comes equipped with a kitchen stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave and a heating and cooling unit. Many visitors on Sunday said the 1,386-square-feet home would be a bargain for those who have the land. “For a 1,300-squre-feet home, it’s a very inexpensive way to go if you have property,” said Dave Padilla of New Castle. “It’s very nice.” Padilla and his wife Melissa recently purchased a custom home in New Castle and paid way more than the $75,000 price of the Country Cottage. The model’s interior, decorated by Drummond, pleased visitors. “It looks nice the way they have it decorated,” Melissa Padilla said. Christy Rosas of Garden Valley and her family are not quite ready to purchase a new home, but liked the Country Cottage model. “The design is functional,” Rosas said. “It’s decorated very tastefully. It’s a great value and I would buy one. The finish work is very nice, too.” While Angel & Associates bring these homes to California, the manufactured homes are made in Hermiston, Ore., in the northeast corner of the state. The company has received numerous awards for the energy efficiency of their homes. “There is a huge energy efficiency savings over site-built homes, sometimes from 40 to 50-percent,” Drummond said. The walls are 2-by-6 feet and the homes have a continual air-duct system with insulation. Prices start at $45,000 and go higher. “These houses are very green friendly with the materials they’re using,” Drummond said. “They use a green fiber in the ceiling and recycled materials. It’s a fully equipped house. We just have to deliver it.” While Drummond had the only model home on display, there were numerous booths that offered remodeling options. When it comes to siding and exterior improvements, owner Ed Holliday of Good News Home Improvements has replaced siding and windows in many homes in Auburn, Grass Valley, Loomis, Weimar, Colfax, Penryn and Nevada City. Holliday’s company in Sacramento has had exhibits at the fair for seven years now. He offers a fiber-cement siding, which is fire retardant and insulated. The vinyl material comes in 19 different colors and in different lap-over styles. Holliday said he has 27 years of experience in siding and offers a 12-month period with no payments or interest. “I’m an Awards Excellence Contractor, which means I’ve had no complaints with the Better Business Bureau in the last seven years,” Holliday said. By mid-afternoon Sunday, Holliday said about a “couple hundred” people had visited his booth during the three-day show, but traffic was down from past shows. “In the past I’ve had up to 100 leads, but this year it’s about one-fifth that,” Holliday said. Good News Home Improvements with five full-time employees is still getting jobs and just completed a project on a New Castle home, which was fitted with all new windows and a patio door. In the past, the company put about 5,000 square feet of siding on the garage of a million-dollar Loomis home. The home had a garage large enough to fit a full-size recreational vehicle and a granny flat. In Weimar, the siding firm put in double-bay, oak-framed windows in a sitting room that has a beautiful view of the Sierra Mountains. Holliday points out that the oak is left unfinished in order for the customer to choose their own stain or paint.
