New Daughters of Norway Lodge Planned

First Organizational Meeting Set

Contact: Judy Felker 916 746-7859

Roseville - The first organizational meeting for starting a new Daughters of Norway lodge in the Sacramento area will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, in the Activity Room at the Roseville Sports Center, Mahaney Regional Park, 1545 Pleasant Grove Blvd., Roseville (Pleasant Grove Blvd. and Woodcreek Oaks). The purpose of the meeting is to welcome prospective members and to determine the amount of interest in starting a new lodge. Janet Ruud, Organizational Co-Chair for the Grand Lodge, Daughters of Norway, will be on hand to run the meeting and provide information about ! the organization. If enough interest is shown, further meetings will be scheduled and plans made for the institution of a new lodge.

Roseville resident Judy Felker is to be credited with the idea for starting a lodge in this area. She made the initial inquiries about the Daughters of Norway, and on September 13, she handed out information about the organization at the Sacramento Scandinavian Festival. Over fifty women signed up to receive more information about the October 12 meeting.

Women of Nordic heritage who are interested in promoting and learning about the arts, foods, language, literature, culture, and history of Norway are welcome to attend the meeting. Refreshments will be served. Those attending the meeting will have the opportunity to become Charter Members when the lodge is instituted. For further information, contact Janet Ruud (253-988-6825 ruudj1norw@aol.com) or Judy Felker (judyfelker@surewest.net 916-746-7859).

The first Daughters of Norway lodge on the West Coast was started in Seattle, Washington, in 1905, and today there are twenty-three lodges in California, Idaho, Iowa, Oregon, Montana, Nevada , and Washington. The purpose of the organization is to preserve and share with our children and our communities a knowledge of Norwegian heritage, and to build among members a strong support system and bond of friendship.
