Two debates featuring candidates for public office will be held next week.
Kiwanis Club of Greater Colfax will host a debate between the two candidates for Placer County Supervisor, District 5, on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Facing off will be Supervisor Bruce Kranz and challenger Jennifer Montgomery.
Following the traditional opening of the Kiwanis Club meeting, the debate will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Colfax High School Performing Arts Theater on Ben Taylor Road.
The panel of three newspaper editors will pose questions of the candidates. A limited number of questions from the audience will be accepted.
A resident of Meadow Vista, Kranz has worked for 30 years as a park ranger, including superintendent of the American River Recreation District.
As a member of the board of supervisors, Kranz claims his record includes balancing a county budget without raising taxes, starting a fire prevention program/biomass fuel program, securing a multi-use helicopter for the Placer County Sheriffs Department and helping to produce a DVD on methamphetamine abuse in Placer County.
Jennifer Montgomery wants the office of Placer County Supervisor to be non-partisan. She has received endorsements from her former opponent Bob Houston, real estate investor Sue Ghilotti and PCWA Board member Otis Wollan.
A resident of Donner Summit where she operates a concierge service for vacation homeowners, Montgomery is an advocate of carefully managed growth.
If elected, she promises to protect District 5 communities from identity theft by developers and wants to revitalize municipal advisory councils.
On Thursday, Oct. 23 PCWA District Director Otis Wollan and challenger Ben Mavy will hold a formal debate starting at 7 p.m. at Sierra Vista Community Center.
The two candidates have agreed to debate the top issues facing the Placer County Water Agency.
If time permits, questions from the audience will be accepted.
Wollan has served on the PCWA board for 20 years and is proud of the agency’s work on the complicated Federal Energy Regulatory Commission relicensing of the Middle Fork hydroelectric system.
Mavy, owner of Mavy Investments in Colfax, is adamant money from the Middle Fork hydroelectric project should be used only for water and power projects. He believes the JPA (consisting of the water agency and the Placer County Board of Supervisors), will divert those revenues.

I never met anyone who’s actually read PCWA’s financial statements. But then I met few who read Enron’s financials in the mid 90’s. We did read them and cut our credit exposure to Enron by over $100 million. PCWA’s reaction to my analysis of them by the way has been broadly similar to that of Enron. Accusations of “political” motives initially and of me wanting to put together a “business deal favoring your constituents” was a recent charge by Gray Allen, another PCWA Director
Well it actually is election time and Ben Mavy is contesting Otis Wollan’s seat for Zone 3/District 5 on PCWA’s Board. Wollan has been on the Board of PCWA as the “Senior Board member” for over 20 years. To help Ben I’ve done two things:
1. There’s a web site at a http://groups.yahoo.com/group/benmavy which has all the information loaded including details of Wollans “other activities “which are quite substantial. All you need is a free Yahoo account.
2. I’ve also prepared a sworn notarized affidavit containing my analysis with the conclusions below. The full affidavit is on the web site.
