Rain Beetles Emerge after (up to) 13 years in the ground.

November brings with it elections, Thanksgiving, and the first hints that winter is really here. Along with that, the Rain Beetles come out during the first rains of the season. This creature is only known on the west coast and is rare to see as they can stay in the ground for up to 13 years! A very clumsy bug, it flys erratically and hits a wall, rock, etc. and tends to land upside down. Then flips and wanders the ground for a while more looking for a mate. Thanks for the information and great pictures. We recently found some rain beetles flailing away upside down in our garage and also a few caught in our fake Halloween spider webs on the front porch last week.

Very interesting. I never knew about these little guys!
