Serving the community: It’s not all politics

-A +A

“Politics is not an end, but a means. It is not a product, but a process. It is the art of government. Like other values it has its counterfeits. So much emphasis has been placed upon the false that the significance of the true has been obscured and politics has come to convey the meaning of crafty and cunning selfishness, instead of candid and sincere service.”  This phrase came from Calvin Coolidge, our nation’s 30th president.
Here in Placer County we have an abundance of talented, hard-working women and men making our communities the wonderful places we call home. Our local political scene is vastly different from what we see in the national spotlight. As the “season” of campaigns, debates, and elections is about to shift into high gear, we applaud all our past and present elected officials.  The commitment, courage, sacrifice and sincerity of our local citizens serving the public many times goes unnoticed.

Contrary to the unbearable bickering and gamesmanship in the national political spotlight, locally there remains a spirit of service, unselfishness, and a willingness to better the community.  We encourage those considering a “run” to make that leap and be part of the engine that motors the day-to-day lives of all Placer County citizens.

And with more than 175 positions available on various local city councils, school boards, and parks, fire, water and utility districts in the county, according to a recent press release from Placer County, there’s an opportunity to serve.  In Auburn, three seats are open on the City Council. The Placer County Water Agency has two seats up for election. All positions hold a responsibility and an opportunity to continue to improve the lives of our citizens.

Candidate filing for the Nov. 6 general election is open to Placer County residents at 8 a.m. on July 16 and closes at 5 p.m. on Aug. 10. We salute those currently holding elected offices.  We applaud those who may be new to politics that will join the process this year.
