Robbery suspect arrest at Nevada-Placer County lineBy: Gus Thomson, Reporter/Columnist
Fleeing into Placer County failed to prevent robbery suspect Steven Jay Petree from arrest.
Petree, 50, was the object of a manhunt in the Coloma area, 17 miles east of Auburn, after he was spotted in a stolen car that later turned up abandoned.
The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office put out an alert to nearby law enforcement to be on the lookout for Petree when the July 25 search turned up no trace.
A transient who divided his time between Georgetown and Placerville, Petree had the potential to cross the American River into Auburn and Placer County, an El Dorado Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.
And that was just what Petree had done when he was sighted on Highway 49 and arrested after a car with him in it was pulled over near the Bear River dividing line between Placer and Nevada Counties, north of Auburn.
A Placer County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said the arrest took place on Sunday. Petree remained in Placer County jail today, with bail set at $365,000.
