A year after winning its second consecutive CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV golf championship, Placer High has informed the Foothill Valley League that it will not be fielding a girls golf team for the 2018 season.
“It would have been tough for everyone involved,” said Placer girls coach Greg French. “We only had five girls turn out for the team and two had never played nine holes before.”
Placer, which won CIF section divisional crowns in 2016 and 2017, was set to compete in the new FVL with Oakmont, Lincoln, Ponderosa, Rio Linda and Nevada Union.
“We wouldn’t have had the skill level needed for a varsity team,” said French. “Other than Birdie, we just didn’t have the golf experience.”
French was referring to Placer junior Birdie Brown, who for the past two seasons has been one of the top girls golfers in the area.
According to French, Brown will be allowed to compete in the CIF Section D-III girls tournament as an individual and also in the spring with the Placer boys team, where she will be able to compete as a boys team member but can’t advance as an individual.
“We need to take a year off and build some interest, experience and golf knowledge,” said French. “This is a good move for everyone involved.”
