Monday May 26 2008 comments Auburn remembers its Fallen Soldiers By: Michael Kirby/Auburn Journal -A +A Kristine Mason (R) and Mona Floyd (L) placed a wreath of flowers on the Auburn Area War Memorial Monday during ceremonies held for Memorial Day to honor veterans and fallen soldiers. War veterans grave sites were decorated with small American Flags at each cemetery. A wreath was placed at the base of the Auburn Area War Memorial at the New Auburn Cemetery Monday during Memorial Day ceremonies. Penny Lucas (L) and Earl Montgomery members of the Auburn Area Color Guard, honored the areas fallen soldiers with a 21 gun salute. Richard "Doc" Bowen attended Monday's Memorial Day ceremonies. Bowen served in WWII as a medic in the 5th Marine Division and was in the battle of Iwo Jima. Retired Admiral Bonnie Potter led the ceremony at the New Auburn Cemetery, as various area leaders spoke. A Memorial Day wreath was laid at the Auburn Area War Memorial at the New Auburn Cemetery during Monday's ceremonies. Don Roby played Amazing Grace on the Bagpipes as the service ended. A rifle and helmet symbolizing the fallen soldier stood nearby.
