‘Good old days’ is a fantasy

Re: “Obama steering us into the abyss,” (Reader Input, Sept. 7) by Ann Laman, who states “We want our country back, the country our forefathers and fathers fought for.” I, for one, would like to know what country she is referring to. Was it just a coincidence that the adjacent article by Cokie and Steven Roberts titled, “Who defines Obama?” answered her (Ms. Laman’s) statement exactly on point? Does Ms. Laman long for the “good old days” of the Depression, robber barons, enslavement, discrimination, segregation and disenfranchisement of minorities and women? Perhaps she longs for corrupt politicians and their “pork barrel” projects’ wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars. There were no “good old days.” If Ms. Laman really wants our country back, she should pursue legislation to return it to the people who honored and treasured it for generations before it was stolen from them: the indigenous inhabitants!
