Placer knocks off Sonora to win 10th section title in last 12 yearsBy: Jeff Nicholson, Sports Editor
Of course the Placer co-ed tennis team took home the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. I title.
Could it have ended any other way?
This is a team that posted a 130-0 record in the 12 years of Pioneer Valley play.
This is the team’s 10th section title in that span.
Placer has produced five boys singles, two girls singles, eight boys doubles, seven girls doubles and six mixed doubles section champions in those 12 years.
So of course they closed their PVL epoch with a bang.
Sophomore Alex Miller, a two-time section champion, cruised past Jake Evans in the boys No. 1 match to set the tone on Wednesday, and Placer downed Sonora 7-2 at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in the section final.
Jason Hensler, who would be the top singles player on almost any other team, beat Thomas Johnson 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles match.
Matt Yee and Brendan Moley teamed in the No. 1 doubles match for a 6-0, 6-2 win over Brian McGee and Ian Smith, while Derek Shreeve and John Frew downed Christian Frochlich and Evran Marfin 6-3, 6-2.
Sonora’s girls singles swept their matches against Lexi Heuer and Ashley Cliffton, but Placer’s girls doubles returned the favor, with Cayenne Gularde and Emily Osborne defeating Sydney Fiecher and Liberty Wheeler 6-3, 7-6 (7-2); and Talia Heath and Cassandra Rhoades knocking off Savannah McIntock and Kayla Parfit 7-6 (9-7), 6-0.
Bryce Gelbach and Megan Cliffton cruised past Jackson Bondord and Haley Jenkins 6-1, 6-1.
So the book is closed on what will forever be one of the most dominant runs any team has had in high school – or any other level – competition. Next season, Placer will compete in the newly formed Foothill Valley League, with boys and girls competing separately.
One thing is certain: Placer’s 1.000 league winning percentage will never be beaten.
