Wanted by authorities on a robbery allegation, Steven Jay Petree was spotted in a stolen car near El Dorado County’s Coloma Club on Wednesday.

The car was later recovered but an intensive manhunt in the Coloma area, 17 miles east of Auburn, failed to collar Petree.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is now asking for help from the public in locating the suspect. He’s a transient known to spend time in the Placerville and Georgetown areas, Sgt. Anthony Prencipe said..

Petree,50, has an active felony warrant for robbery, the Sheriff’s Office said. He was also arrested in June on a spousal battery allegation, Sheriff’s Office records show.

The Coloma Club is located at Highway 49 near Marshall Road and Lotus Road.

Deputies, including searchers in the air, were unsuccessful in locating Petree on Wednesday and he was still at large today, Prencipe said.

Anyone who believes they have seen Petree should call local law enforcement. Prencipe said he wouldn’t rule out the possibility that Petree could be in the Auburn area.

“We recommend not approaching him and contacting local authorities,” Prencipe said.
