It’s Auburn’s biggest four-day event of the year and the 2018 installment of the Gold Country Fair opens today.

“California Nights & Carnival Lights’ is the theme of this year’s fair in Auburn and it promises all that, plus monster trucks, carnival rides, a demolition derby, musical acts and plenty of genuine farm animals as well.

Butler Amusements staff were busy Wednesday setting up the carnival on the fairgrounds playing field, filling the space with color and the promise of some thrill rides for the more daring fair-goers — as well as kinder, gentler experiences for younger ones.

The fair opens today at 4 p.m. and runs until 11 p.m. “Mania! The Live Beatles Experience,” will command the Barefoot Wine and Bubbly Stage with sets at 7, 8 and 9 p.m.

Friday’s fair will be from 4 p.m. to midnight. Saturday will provide a day’s worth of fun, with gates open from 10 a.m. to midnight. The highlight Saturday promises to be the separately ticketed Monster Trucks & Quad Wars event at McCann Stadium starting at 6 p.m.

Sunday’s day at the fair lasts from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Another separately ticketed event — the Gold Country Fair Demolition Derby — is from 1 to 4 p.m. at McCann Stadium.

The fair is at 1273 High St., with $6 parking off Auburn Folsom Road. Admission is $5 today and then $10 for general admission at the gate, with discounts for children, seniors and military.
