Delaine Eastin will be the keynote speaker at the Auburn Area Democratic Club’s 15th annual fundraiser
The gala will include hors d’oeuvres, wine and beer, music by the Equinox Jazz Ensemble and a silent auction.
Eastin is a native Californian and received her bachelor’s degree from UC Davis and her masters in political science at UC Santa Barbara. She taught at several community colleges, and then worked as an accounting manager and corporate planner while serving on the City Council in Union City, until she was elected to the State Assembly in 1986. From 1995 to 2003, she was state superintendent of public instruction under former governors Pete Wilson and Gray Davis. Eastin then became the first executive director of the National Institute of Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C., before returning to California to teach at Mills College. Since 2008, she has been a speaker and board member on issues of education policy, nutrition, and electing women to public office. Eastin recently ran as a Democratic nominee for governor of California, however, she lost to Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom.
