The Del Oro boys water polo team is off to a strong start to its 2017 season.
Under the guidance of coach Jake Hastie, the Golden Eagles defeated Roseville last week in a non-league match, 19-8, and then went on to post a solid 4-1 record and finish in 9th place in the 64-team at the Sierra Shootout Tournament.
“The kids did a great job last week,” said Hastie. “Grady Callahan and Ryan Clark wwere our leaders on offense and Wyatt Jackson led the defense.”

Also getting into the scoring act for Del Oro were Nick O’Shea with a pair of scores and Brady Shaw, Ben Porter, Hunter Jeppson, Wyatt Jackson, Jackson Stanwick and Max Higginbotham, all with one score apiece.

In its final game of the tournament, Del Oro outscored Bishop O’ Dowd of Oakland 4-2 in the pivotal fourth quarter to take a tough 11-8 win over the Dragons. Callahan and Clark both netted four goals apiece while Jackson, O’Shea and Andrew Howard all tallied one each. Del Oro goal keeper Evan Daley also played well.
