Foot massage for healing has been practiced in China for thousands of years. Now, two practitioners have a studio in Downtown Auburn. Red Lantern Foot Reflexology opened on Dec. 1 on Lincoln Way. Ping Yang and business partner Xin Jin Bai studied the art of reflexology in Los Angeles, where it is very popular, family friend Chris Wang said. Yang, who has lived in the Auburn area for nine years, also owns two restaurants — the Golden Palace in Auburn and the Hunan restaurant in Lake of the Pines. Yang’s decision to expand into foot and body massage was purely practical. “There was no other business offering it in the area,” Yang said. The process is about much more than massage. According to traditional Chinese medicine, there are acupuncture points around the body. These pressure points can be manipulated to ease pain and help blood circulation, Yang explained. The Red Lantern’s informational brochure lists other benefits such as relaxation, rejuvenation of tired feet, impact on blood pressure and cholesterol and mental health benefits. It can also complement cancer care by easing pain, nausea, vomiting and anxiety. However, the brochure cautions that reflexology’s benefits for illness and disease are still under investigation. Yang and Bai designed the Red Lantern’s studio to maximize relaxation, with low lighting, recliners and a flat-screen TV. Bringing in new types of businesses is good for the community, Auburn Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bruce Cosgrove said Tuesday. “Diversity of businesses in any commercial core area draws more people to that particular center, in this case to Downtown Auburn,” he said. “The more reasons for people to come to Downtown or any shopping center, the better.” The studio accepts walk-ins as well as appointments. There are also gift certificates available for holiday or other gift-giving. Cost of a foot massage starts at $19.99 for 30 minutes to $44.99 for 90 minutes. A body massage is $29.99 for 30 minutes up to $74.99 for 90 minutes.
