Auburn gets a taste of the French Quarter

Mardi Gras fundraiser benefits Placer High
Auburn residents can party bourbon-street style Saturday night, without leaving town. The Power Club is being transformed into the New Orleans French Quarter for a Mardi Gras Dinner and Dance Party. Proceeds will benefit the arts, industrial arts and athletics at Placer High School. Toby Covich, Placer High teacher and visual arts and performing arts chair, said community support for school fundraisers is crucial. “The community supporting our programs by doing fundraisers like the Mardi Gras event are always a needed benefit,” Covich said. “Aside from the materials we place in students’ hands are numerous other large tools and equipment that must be maintained, repaired and replaced.” Covich said he plans to distribute the proceeds of the fundraiser among Placer’s music, drama, visual arts and industrial arts programs. Budgets cuts in education, strict enforcement of schools collecting material fees from students and the growing cost of materials have all been factors that put the budget in the red, according to Covich. For the price of their ticket, party-goers can groove to the sounds of two musical acts. The Aaron Gayden Band featuring Brianna Lee, is a self-described “Louisiana, Cajun-style rockin’ dance band.” Trumpet soloist Joe Souza will also provide entertainment. There will be plenty of Cajun-style food to complete the New Orleans vibe. The menu includes highlights, like jambalaya, blackened chicken wings and chicken sliders. For those looking to collide with lady luck a silent auction and raffle round out the fundraising festivities. Placer football mom Judy Sage helped chair the event. She said people should come out for the good times to be had. “(It’s) fun, fun, fun and profitable for the students,” Sage said. “(The) community (is) supporting the student and showing them we believe in them and they are important.” Alfred Lee, who owns the Powers Mansion Inn and Power Club, is hoping a large amount of revenue can be raised for sports teams at Placer. The Power Club even brewed a special craft-beer for the event, an Indian Pale Ale called “Hollow’s Brew.” Lee said he hopes to duplicate the success of the last fundraising event for Placer held at the Power Club, which raised $10,000. “It’s a place for people to get dressed up and dance and have good food in a really jovial atmosphere,” Lee said. “Have a beer and some good food and a kid will get a uniform or bus ride.” Reach Sara Seyydin at firstname.lastname@example.org. ______________________________________________________ What: Mardi Gras Dinner and Dance Party When: Oct. 29, Where: The Power Club, 195 Harrison Avenue, Auburn Cost: $25 in advance, $35 at the door, $200 Package- Package includes two Mardi Gras Tickets, one night stay at the Powers Mansion Inn, two raffle tickets and breakfast.
