Auburn Major All-Stars still swinging in Rio Linda

The Auburn Little League Major Division softball all-star team fought off elimination Wednesday night in Rio Linda at the District 6 Tournament. Auburn defeated the host squad 3-2 at pitcher Bethany Thornton scattered five hits in six innings for the win. Catcher Sarah Kosmata was outstanding with the bat and the glove. She was 1-for-2 with two RBIs to pace the offense. She threw out a baserunner at second base to end the game as Emily Geil took the throw and applied the tag. Earlier in the game, Geil threw out a runner at home on a double-steal attempt. Auburn opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Gilroy last Saturday as Thornton dropped the pitcher’s duel. Elena Topete, Kosmata and Geil were outstanding on defense. On Wednesday, Auburn crushed McKinleyville 12-2 in five innings. Peyton McCortney pitched three innings for the win, striking out three. Thornton struck out five in two innings to close out the game. Topete was 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Brittany Welch was 2-for-2 with two runs and Thorntonn was 2-for-3 with two runs. Auburn is back in action tonight, taking on Cottonwood at 5:30 p.m. at Rio Linda. — Todd Mordhorst
