Auburn Police Department officers defused a potentially dangerous situation Monday afternoon in the 100 block of Pine Street in Auburn.

At approximately 12:20 p.m. officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex on Pine Street where John William Hurd, 47, of Auburn, had allegedly threatened a female neighbor. When officers approached Hurd’s apartment they heard the sound of a pump-action shotgun emanate from the residence, according to a press release issued by the Auburn Police Department Tuesday morning.

After hearing the shotgun, law enforcement did not make contact at the apartment. They evacuated the victim from her apartment and repositioned themselves away from Hurd’s residence.

According to the release, officers then attempted to contact Hurd via telephone, which was unsuccessful. Hurd eventually exited his apartment after the use of a patrol unit public address system. During contact with police, Hurd allegedly resisted and fought with officers. He was subsequently arrested for criminal threats and resisting, obstructing and delaying an officer.

Hurd was taken to Placer County Jail for booking and was in custody as of Tuesday morning. His bail is set at $25,000.
