Be bear-smart in the canyon

I like having bears in the canyon, but people have to take more caution to protect themselves and the bears (Journal, Sept. 22). People should put the trash out when they need to, and not feed the bears. Maybe we should use bear boxes for our trash like they do at Tahoe. People shouldn’t freak out just because they see a bear. They should go out and clap their hands or make lots of noise to let the bear know that that place is not a good place to come. You can also carry bear spray when you take a hike in the canyon, but it’s best to let the bear go its own way. Matthew Wirsch, age 12, Auburn
