Build new type of train crossing

Re: “Police focusing on SUV,” (Journal, Jan. 30). People who read about the SUV/train crash are looking at the accident from the point of view of the train driver. All the train driver could do was hit the brakes and hope the train would stop in time. Unfortunately, he knew the train wouldn’t stop. Commuter trains usually take a mile to stop. He must have felt devastated. On average, trains weigh about 8,000 tons. The train was traveling at 55 mph when the SUV collided with it. The average person doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to realize 8,000 tons traveling at 55 mph isn’t going to stop in 100 to 200 feet. In my opinion, the railroad crossing arms that come down aren’t as effective as they should be. I think there should be metal bars that rise out of the ground when a train is coming then lower after the train has passed. It would be expensive but a system like this will stop people like the driver of the SUV from trying to beat a train at a crossing. STEVEN OVERDEVEST, student, Auburn
