By: Journal Sports Staff
Nine-year-old Madison Candler of Auburn Gymnastics Center won the vault competition at the level 4 state championships in Pinole over the weekend. The Colfax gymnast scored a 9.5, wowing the judges with a dynamic and powerful performance. Candler was one of six qualifiers from Auburn Gymnastics Center’s level 4 team. Alyson Osborn, Megan Leaman, Kelcey Phillips, Maggie Moore and Madelyn Schildmeyer all joined more than 600 other competitors from Northern California to compete against the best gymnasts in each of the age groups. “It takes hard work to get to this level of competition,” coach Natalie Otis said. “I always like to point out to the girls that as great as some of the competition looks at the meet, that they are one of those great gymnasts.” Candler received three additional medals for finishing in the top 10 in her age division. Auburn’s Osborn ascended the awards stand for her top 10 performances on vault (9.2) and bars (8.875). Auburn Gymnastics Center is offering a winter gymnastics camp for beginners age 3 to 13 for four days between Christmas and New Years Day and is hosting open tryouts for the competitive team on Jan. 5.
