As a social justice advocate, I appreciate (Gold Country Media’s) Sena Christian’s reporting and the Journal’s carrying of the story (Jan. 15) about the unspent state-mandated funds to help English learners, and I hope they will continue to follow up on this story until my tax dollars are spent helping people who are trying to create a better life for themselves and their families. Life can be very difficult for those trying to learn how to communicate with the English-speaking majority. As a white, middle-age male aware of the privilege and power I derive from my skin color and gender, I cringe when I hear people state the problem as “Why don’t they just learn English?” Here’s an idea — why not use your English skills and volunteer with a group such as the free ESL classes at Rock Creek School co-sponsored by the Latino Leadership Council and the Social Action Committee of the Sierra Foothills Unitarian Universalists and become part of the solution?
