AUBURN CA - A five-vehicle, chain-reaction crash on Highway 49 in Auburn sent four people to hospital Tuesday. The crash occurred just before 5:30 p.m. on a downhill section of southbound Highway 49, just north of the Elm Avenue intersection. Auburn Police said two adults and two children were taken by ambulance to hospital with what are believed to be minor to moderate injuries. Officer Brent Froberg said four vehicles were stopped in a row when a fifth vehicle didn't halt in time to prevent a collision. That vehicle ran into the back of a car, starting a chain reaction collision, he said. Grass Valley's Dylan Greist, who was in a convertible Mustang involved in the crash, said traffic was backed up for the Elm-49 light and the vehicle he was in was stopped. "We heard two big bumps and then someone slammed into us," Greist said. Greist said that while medical personnel worked on people involved in the crash, everyone appeared to have remained conscious. Traffic was rerouted around the accident scene before vehicles could be moved to the side of the busy highway and the injured could be taken away. Traffic was moving in both directions by 5:50 p.m.
