St. Joseph Catholic Church This Week: To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches." Like many things in the world, it starts small before it becomes big. The image that Jesus presents in this weekend's gospel illustrates “How” the kingdom of God can grow large from starting small. When we look back at the early years of the Church, it started with a very few. Today we number in the billions of individuals who are part of the Catholic Church. It is the fruit of many who have gone before us that perhaps start with a tiny spark of faith in their hearts, to eventually becoming a big flame that fires up others. But as with the mustard seed, unless we sow and care for it, it remains a seed. A spark will die out if we do not fan it into a flame and add fuel. Today we confront an issue that will deeply affect a basic freedom afforded us as citizens of this country. As an insert today, we have the information that US Conference of Catholic Bishops has put out regarding the Health and Human Services Mandate. It is our duty as faithful to be informed of issues that will affect our rights as individuals and as an institution. It is our duty to respond accordingly with ample information to discern the right course of action. Pastor: Fr. Brian Atienza, Deacons Richard Cadenasso, and Mike Young.
