Colfax climbs back into PVL race
The Colfax High volleyball team jumped right back into the Pioneer Valley League title race Wednesday night.
The Falcons outlasted Bear River 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 29-27 to hand the Bruins their first PVL loss. The result leaves Colfax, Bear River and Placer all at 3-1 in league play.
Senior Kelsey Whittet capped an outstanding match with the final kill for the Falcons. Whittet served 23 points, including five aces, to go with nine kills.
Iona Lofrano led Colfax with 15 kills and four blocks while Maddi Ittner had nine kills and two blocks. Ashley Scott hustled for 17 digs and Maggie Aubuchon chipped in with seven big blocks. Haley Biles dished out 33 assists and Lindsey Biles added 11.
Sara Davidson, Katie Thomas, Taylor Pitts, Emily Moore and Ashley Bourne also contributed to the Colfax cause.
Bear River junior Sara Schell had a big night with 21 kills. Katie Tomkiewicz and Kirstin Pereira added eight kills each.
“It was a good week for us and we were a few points away from making it a great week,” Bear River coach Matt McDonald said. “Now it’s a three-way tie and whoever plays the best in the second half of league gets a banner on their wall.”
Placer 3, Lincoln 0 — The Hillgals rebounded from their first PVL loss with a 25-12, 25-10, 25-20 sweep of the overmatched Zebras at Earl Crabbe Gym.
Senior Michaela Leonard led a balanced attack with 10 kills. Junior Kirstin Schauble added nine and senior Erin Ellner tossed in eight for Placer (3-1 PVL). Gabby Orteza served up three aces in the win.
