Community invited to mural painting party

Local artist will guide novices through the process
An Auburn wall is getting a facelift and the artists creating its transformation are inviting the community to help on Saturday. The wall on the side of Rico’s Barber Shop and Depoe Bay Coffee Co., off of High Street, will soon have a mural of the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge. It was designed by recent Placer High graduate Archie Warren and spearheaded by the Auburn Arts Commission. City Council approved the new mural in November for a cost of $1,500 and donations from the community. It is being painted just in time for the centennial year of the bridge’s opening. Warren said members of the community are invited to the block party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., where they can paint part of the mural themselves. Warren will be there to give guidance along the way. He said the reason for getting the community involved was simple. “It’s really the community’s,” Warren said. “It’s a piece of their history and an outlet for their creative expression.” Robert Turner, of Auburn, real estate agent and committee member of the Auburn Arts Commission said he hopes the mural will continue to spur more art projects around town. “It’s a gift to the community,” Turner said. “It’s really a way to inspire all generations of artists to come forward.” Since the approval of the mural, Turner said several other artists have approached him about designing murals for Auburn. Others in town, like Rachel Jones, 18, of Auburn, are excited to make their mark on the wall. “It’s going to be there for a long time,” Jones said. “I’ve grown up here, so for me it’s fun to see if I move away I will have something to come back and look at and say ‘I was a part of that.’” Turner said the location of the mural is on the way to the bridge, where a lot of cyclists gather before heading into the canyon. “It’s kind of a cool spot for it,” Turner said. “It’s the centennial year for it.” Reach Sara Seyydin at email@example.com. ______________________________________________________ What: Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge Mural Block Party When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Where: 897 High St., Auburn Event Details: Join mural artist Archie Warren and the Auburn Arts Commission to kick off the painting of the Mountain Quarries Railroad Bridge Mural.
