Community roundup: Del Oro splits for two tourneys

The Del Oro wrestling team split up this weekend to compete in two tournaments. The more experienced wrestlers traveled to Temecula for the ?Battle for the Belt,? while 15 underclassmen stayed closer to home for the Mark Fuller Invitational in Lincoln. Senior Austin Branum was the only Eagle to advance to the finals at the Battle for the Belt. The 152-pounder fell 23-8 to Isaiah Martinez of Lemoore Newark Memorial, who is the defending CIF state champion, to finish second. Despite their top wrestlers not being in the tournament, the Golden Eagles edged out Pershing Co. (Nev.) for first place at the invitational. Del Oro was down 10 points but rallied to finish with 140 1/2 points to Pershing Co.?s 137. Del Oro sent 15 wrestlers to the tournament with only one junior, Tanner Woods, making the trip. The rest of the team was comprised of freshmen and sophomores. Will Towers (106) finished third, along with Tanner Robinson (126), Zaine Demarte (145), Saul Menesis (heavyweight) and Woods. In fifth were Janson Englebrecht (113), Ian Gassaway (120) and Santino Garcia (195). Placer finishes sixth at tourney The Placer High wrestling team finished sixth at the Mark Fuller Invitational where four of its wrestlers medaled. Junior Gama Gomez (132), junior Mason Lenover (170) and junior Ryan Talley (195) all finished third. Freshman Jack Morris, who was pulled up from junior varsity for Brendan Packheiser who was injured, finished fifth in the160-pound division. Placer seeks HOF nominations The Placer High School Hall of Fame committee is on the hunt for 2012 nominations. It is seeking alumni or faculty nominees who have excelled in school, sports and throughout the community. Alumni should have played at Placer for at least two years and graduated at least five years prior to being nominated. Faculty are required to have taught or coached at Placer for at least 10 years and be retired for at least five. Nominations are due by March 1. The nomination form is also available at Auburn Little League baseball and softball signups Auburn Little League will hold signups from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Round Table Pizza at 370 Elm St. It will also hold tryouts Jan. 21 and 29 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. both days at Auburn Recreation District Park for baseball and Skyridge Elementary for softball.
